This predates the work of Gerald Gardner, anthropologist and occultists, and is a manuscript that was compiled by occultist Charles Leland in his search of active practitioners of Italian witchcraft. After years of trying to meet practitioners, he came across one, Madedelena, who then transmitted to him a while oral tradition that was later translated and first published in the late 1800s. Even today there is debate as to whether Maddelena even existed, contention as to if this text is an authentic representation of Italian witchcraft at the time. What is certain is that this text influenced and continues to influence Pagan communities.
