CHISPA: The Thirteen Origins is a series of one-shot origin stories for the members of The Thirteen, a group of Mexicans and Mexican Americans who discover they are chispas, able to wield impossible powers. Zoe Vidal’s birthday is difficult for her, and her eighteenth is no different. As she was born, her mother died willingly to give Zoe life. This year’s birthday is even worse than normal because a real estate developer is trying to buy out the entire block that her family’s restaurant is in to gentrify the entire place. When the real estate developer’s goons try to burn her home in the middle of the night in a bid to force them out, Zoe’s powers reveal themselves and she has to choose what kind of spark she’ll be—vengeful, or life-giving.
